Beach litter

Have you seen litter on the beach in Hawaii?

Litter is trash that is not in the right place. You might see it on the street, sidewalk, or beach. Common litter includes cans, bottles, cigarettes butts, and candy wrappers.

Of course, litter is ugly, but it's also bad for the animals that live in the ocean. Seabirds, like seagulls, eat litter and die. Marine mammals, like sea otters, can get caught in litter and die.

You are going to watch a short video about garbage on beaches. You can watch it as many times as you want to. As you watch, try to answer the following questions:
1)How much litter annually pollutes the ocean?
2)What animals are killed by litter?
3)What should we do when we see garbage on the beach?

Now, watch the video: Pick It Up.
The words are below.

“Every year, over 1 billion pieces of trash pollute our oceans and coastline. If we don't pick it up, who will? Millions of seabirds, marine mammals, and turtles are killed annually by human garbage. We've got to pick it up.”

You can watch the video as many times as you like. After watching, go to the next page and answer the questions.
