This problem is not limited to Lunarpages. I encountered the same thing trying to move the website, which I managed, and my previous employer. They claim it’s some form of security, so your site cannot be snapped up if you’re a day late in payment. I call BS. That kind of security can be done through verification, there is no reason to hold domains hostage as you put it.

Good to know I’m not the only one who’s been jerked around this way, but sorry to hear that it happened to you, too.

As I understand it, it’s not a rule imposed by Lunarpages – and I don’t hold them responsible for the rule. What they are responsible for it telling customers about it. And other hosts should do that, too.
