Resume design

Posted by Betsy on March 27, 2009 in Personal, Web2.0 |

I’m looking for a job.

I’ll be begging you for job leads soon enough (after I know where I’m moving to), but here’s what I’ve been absorbing: I’ve seen many blog posts and tweets recently about how to get a job using social media such as LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook. (For example, there’s this Lifehacker post and this one, this one from Mashable and this one, and, oops, here’s just now a tweet from @anitaborg_org of this post.)  I have become convinced that each person’s web presence – including their social media profiles and activity, blogs, and websites – are the new ultra-mega CV.

But when someone asks you to send a resume, you still have to send something more succinct than your ultra-mega CV. I’ve looked into VisualCV, and it seems really good if you don’t have a website of your own already. But I can’t see how it can add anything to the CV I’ve already got on this site, so I haven’t completed mine. I’m also not a big fan of the look of the exported PDFs from that site.

I don’t claim to be a designer, but I like a resume with a bit more visual appeal than the standard black-bullet-points-on-a-white-background. If that’s the only kind of resume that is acceptable for a particular job, I don’t want that job.

Here’s a resume (also embedded below) that I created using Word 2007. (I know, it’s not open source – but I already paid for the program, and I do like how easy it is to use.) I’d appreciate any feedback on the design. I’ll be tweaking the content to better fit the company I’m sending it to.
